About the event

A few words about the exhibit title:

Microcosms and Macrocosms

An ancient philosophical tradition posits a structural similarity between the human (micro or small iteration of creation) and the Macrocosm of the cosmos. In this philosophy, the great order or mystery of being is iterated in large and small systems. Thus, human behavior reflected the larger cosmos and the behaviors of nature reflected truths about human beings. There was an assumed symmetry between the vastness of the created universe and the small actions of beings on Earth.

In modern discourse, the terms microcosm and macrocosm have evolved to encompass any smaller system that symbolizes a larger one. This is evident in the use of metaphors like “the seasons of life,” which illustrates that just as nature goes through seasons, so do other living beings. We also think of a microcosm as a small place, a slice of society, or a situation with the same characteristics as something much larger. So, a microcosm can be a region within something larger or a sampling. The Macrocosm would be the larger geographic or social structure or situation represented.

For this unique exhibition, we invite artists to delve into the fascinating concepts of microcosm and macrocosm. Whether you choose to focus on the intricate, almost invisible world around us, or to step back and capture the grandeur of the larger view, the choice is yours. You can even magnify something tiny or miniaturize something normally experienced as vast. The possibilities are endless, and it's all about your unique perspective!
